Fasting and Food Intake
I was watching a rerun of a popular American TV Series.
In this particular episode, one of the main characters (who is a college reporter) was fasting during Ramadan as a research for her next newspaper piece on Religious topics. Initially I was quite touched that the TV series actually put this plot during Ramadan as I was hoping this can educate the American public somewhat of our practices and the ideas behind it. However to my dismay, at one point during the hour, the character was shown yelling at her roomate who was eating lunch saying that she is inhaling the food aroma/particles and that is forbidden too.
This is not what fasting is about! The show gave the impression that the whole month is just about food intake and food particles. But it's much more than that. For one, being angry is also forbidden! If you are angry during fasting, you might as well eat.
Anyways, the way I see it, I am observing fasting for several reasons. One is to train my mental control. Second is to train my compassion for the less fortunate (you feel their hunger during the day). Third is to train and cleanse my body.
Fasting can actually be good for your health (and diet!) if done correctly. Even diabetics can observe fasting and on some studies, researchers found that the regulated diet benefits them. And for really sick/unfit people, Islam do exempt them from the exercise.
If you are fairly new at Islamic fasting (sunrise to sunset only, not continuous 40 days 40 nights!), then this article is a good read for you. It explains how fasting is beneficial, list the type of food that can make your fasting better for your health and more bearable and also gives you tip of what you might be doing wrong when you run into problems like ulcers, constipation, etc
" Fasting has its advantages from the point of view of health and hygiene. Islam wants a Muslim to be healthy, clean, alert, agile and energetic. "Fast to be healthy," had said the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.). And physicians today acknowledge the many benefits of fasting that ensure health and the soundness of one's body and mind. Some of these positive points have a direct influence on psychology and physique of the fasting individual.
...
In view of the long hours of fasting, we should consume slow digesting foods including fiber containing-foods rather than fast-digesting foods; slow digesting foods including fiber containing-foods rather than fast-digesting foods. Slow digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while fast-digesting foods last for only 3 to 4 hours.
