My unconventional first day of ramadan
When most people think first day of ramdan they think big family, loads of kids and of course loadz of food.
My parents got divorced 6 years ago, and therefore the big family first day tradition kinda died after that. At first there were the arguments of who do we (the 4 kids) have fetaar with on the first day. Each one of us has a different choice - but generally 3 of us have fetaar with my mom - and one goes with my dad - and then dad gets first day of the feast instead.
Our single parent household has developed its own tradition over the 6 years. Our big family fetaar consist of my mom's 3 best friends - all divorced in their mid fifties - and their kids. Each year we gather up, me, my grandma - who gets grumpier than she usually is because of all the fuss, my mom, her 3 friends two of which have a daughter each, my sister and sometimes my brother. Since they are all part of this French-speaking sub-culture, conversations are held in French, and the menu includes volle au vents, pumpkin pie, ice cream with Meringue and the most oriental thing we have is a lovely Turkish dish with Walnut sauce (sharkasseyah). We also have lime beans with almonds, pasta with béchamel sauce and this beautiful pie with white cheese and mint that I have to go make now.
It's quite an un-conventional first day of ramadan, but it's always a great laugh. We may not all be related by blood, but it does feel like family.
