mercury is different than moon!!

when i posted that in the begining of Ramadan about how the Saudis decide on the starting day of the month.......and have seen that in an Emirati newspaper few years ago with one guy pictured pointing toward the sky, and written under the picture that this guy has visually observed the moon.
for Arabic readers, I've found this article interesting, for English readers......the heading says: Surprise!! tens of millions of people who followed the Saudis observation has started the month for visually observing Mercury and not the Moon!!!!
Although how funny it looks, but it's quite disappointing, as the people who don't believe in science and believe that muslims should be living in the same way as the arabs used to 1427 years ago have lost a credit now, or at least I hope so.
I've got this story from one good friend of my father, who invitied some Saudi friends to come to Egypt and spend the vacation time there........the guy invited them for dinner at his country house in a small village somewhere in southern Egypt (Se'edy) and when food was served on the table, they rejected to eat and they insisted to put the food on the ground because that's how the people during prophet's time used to!! well, anyway the guy asked his son to spoil their luxurious cars' tyres, so when they're about to leave and discovered that all the tyres are flat, the guy told them........bloody hell then, why do you need cars, if the people from the prophet's time were not using them, I've got some donkeys for you to get back to Cairo!!!

Man, so year after year when I start my fast a day early because I read the online edition of the Gulf News and they announce Ramadan before anyone else it is in honor of the Greek named Mercury and not al-hilel? So disappointing, here I thought I was getting a headstart but I am probably just victim to people trying to look too hard and be the first to see the moon. Oh well, you should still follow your local masjid and follow their announcement, even if it is incorrect (unless you are able to confirm it is incorrect in advance, then????).

Bro, if muslims have spent 5 minutes, couple of days before Ramadan, thinking about when the month should start, they would discover that the point of visually observing the new moon isn't the act of seeing it, but to have the right start of the month....welcome to modern astronomical sciences and satellites.
Pitty then for people living in countries with unclear skies, they'll never have Ramadan!!
